NO SUCH THING AS DEMONS

ARTICLE XII – SECTION D: The Evil Angels

Know Thine Enemy!

We are part of a war, and it is a spiritual war; and there are a host of evil angels determined to halt our spiritual growth and harm us.  In this spiritual war, you would be a fool not to study your enemy.

The enemy most assuredly exists.  The enemy is often contrasted with the angels that continue to do God’s will:

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.  Jud 1:6.

Sometimes, God uses evil angels to serve His purposes:

How he had wrought his signs in Egypt…He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.  Psa 78:43a,49.

They are in Satan’s service:

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:  Mat 25:41

Demonology: This is what Christian theologians call the study of demons.

Problem:  There is no such thing as demons.

The word demon is a derivative of the ancient Greek word daimon (lesser gods of Greek mythology).  So, the word demon has been available for use in the English language since before the 1200’s.  Why was it not used in any of the English Bible translations, to include the only Bible God authorizes in the English language (the Authorized Version), until modern era bibles?  It was done by the enemy to deceive you into fighting a false enemy.

The Authorized Version translates the Greek word daimon (or its forms) as devils instead of demons because that is what they are, devils.  Devils are devils and not demons because they are the fallen angels in the Devil’s service.

And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.  Rev 12:7-9.

The error in modern bibles by making this change creates a difference between demons and devils.  The evil angels are the devils, and that is the best evidence from Scripture.  Within the “demon” hypothesis, there exist false doctrines in relation to the origins of “demons.”

Some teach that “demons” are spirits of deceased wicked men.  However, this cannot be, for the Bible declares the unsaved dead are in hell and not roaming the earth (Psa 9:17; Luk16:23; Rev 20:13).

There are false teachers that claim “demons” are spirits of a pre-Adamite race.  There is no scriptural support whatsoever for this view.  The Bible declares that Adam was the first man (1Co 15:45).

Pre-Adamisim is a convoluted belief with many branches.  The first debates connected with Pre-Adamisim started in 170 A.D. over the age of earth, believed by those involved at that time to be100k years.  This debate was started by pagans, and extended to 1140 A.D. where the age of the earth morphed to millions of years old.

In 904 A.D., Sabeans added to this debate the belief that people lived before Adam, and Adam had parents.  At the time, this was simply dismissed by Bible revelation – God created Adam.

In 1578, Familists began to believe that there were “men” before Adam.  Quakers, Baptist, and Unitarians drew ideas from Familists.  In 1591, Giordano Bruno (an Italian Dominican friar), was the first to use Pre-Adamisim to argue racial differences (Jew vs. Ethiopian).

Isaac La Peyrère (a Millenarian) in 1655, argued that Rom 5:12-14 meant Adam sinned morally, thus Adamic law existed and subsequently that there was a lawless world before Adam, containing two creations; (first Gentiles, then Adam – father of the Hebrews).  This account became the basis for modern racism.

François Bernier (French physician), in 1684, published “A new division of the Earth, according to the different species or races of men who inhabit it,” distinguishing four or five races (with no hierarchical distinction between them).  Racist Pre-Adamisim continued into 1800s.  In Europe, it took the form of the inferiority of non-Western people, and in the USA of non-whites, especially the Civil War era.

Non-racist Pre-Adamisim is traced to Paschal Beverly Randolph, an occultist.  He wrote a book in 1863 claiming pre-Adamites were civilized, while others argued they were beasts or (not fully human) hominids.  Others holding to non-racist Pre-Adamisim included mainstream Christians such as the evangelist R. A. Torrey (1856–1928), who believed in the false Gap Theory and that pre-Adamites survived into the present day.  Also, Kathryn Kuhlman and Derek Prince among Pentecostals, John Stott among Anglicans, and Old Earth creationist Hugh Ross.  There are many others not listed for brevity.

Beware of the false doctrine of Pre-Adamisim.  There is absolutely no biblical basis for its belief.

Another false origin of “demons” is that they are the spirits from the unnatural union between angels and women in Genesis 6.   However, this view, like the previous two, falls with biblical support.

The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.  Psa 9:17.

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.  Rev 20:13.

Therefore, we must proceed with the best explanation being the evil angels are devils (not demons), a reality recognized by Christ:

And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.  Mat 12:26-28.

It was a reality recognized by the 70 disciples:

And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.  Luk 10:17-20.

And finally, it was a reality recognized by the Apostle Paul:

But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.  1Co 10:20-21.
